Rinjani Mountain is one of Indonesia’s highest peaks located in West Nusa Tenggara. Rinjani Mountain is also one of the 10 most beautiful mountain peaks in Indonesia. At 3,726 meters above sea level, Rinjani Mountain has the ecological and cultural values that make Rinjani Mountain creadible to be the worldgeopark.
Geopark is a geological region (geological Heritages) and the area of cultural heritage (cultural Heritages) which serves as an area of conservation, education and sustainable development. Determination of the world geopark performed in the Global Geoparks Network Bureau session, an agency under the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
However geoparkis not just in terms of volcanology. Cultural factors and patterns of life in the surrounding communities become the major consideration. Local residents activelyto be involved in the implementation of geology-based tourism. With these efforts, the local community raised its economic growth.
Indonesia has only had one site which is designated as a world geopark. The first global geoparkisBaturMountain in Bali. BaturMountain is defined as a world geopark in 2012 September ago. This number is very small compared with the total number of geopark in the world, currently there are 100 sites. And China became the country with the highest number of geopark, they have 29 global geopark.
RinjaniMountainfrom the beginning has been predicted to become the world geopark along with BaturMountain, Toba Lake, and Sewu Mountains. The second highest volcano in Indonesia has an important geological heritage value. Rinjaniis a natural heritage site by the charm of the caldera and savanna. Rinjani also has a governing body which actively involves local residents, that are Rinjani Trekking Management Board (RTMB).
With all its potential, it is creadible if RinjaniMountain submitted to the Global Geoparks Network recognition Bureau as one of the world geopark. Even efforts in that direction have been started since the year 2008. However, up to several times a session, it turns out the status ofRinjaniMountaindoes not go into the world geopark.
Other Global Geopark candidate in Indonesia
RinjaniMountain is not the only candidate afterBatur Mountain as a world geopark in Indonesia. Two other sites which have been submitted to the Global Geoparks Network is Toba Lakein North Sumatra and Sewu Mountain coast stretching south from Yogyakarta, Central Java, to East Java.
In addition, the government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) will register 4 other sites. The fourth site is Merangin-Kerinci district-Sorolangun (Jambi), Raja Ampat Islands (Papua), \PangandaranParahyangan-North Bandung (West Java) and Karst Maros (South Sulawesi).
Hopefully, all of sites, including Rinjani Mountain, quickly get recognition as a global geopark. With the geopark of the world, it will not only be the center of a visit to the geologist who want to study about the volcano, but also increase tourist to visit from all over the world. The impact is economic growth surrounding communities.
